Aurora Police Clear Officer in Kilyn Lewis Shooting

An internal investigation by the Aurora Police Department found that Officer Michael Dieck did not violate agency policy during the shooting of Kilyn Lewis, an unarmed Black man, on May 23. Dieck's actions were deemed compliant with training protocols when Lewis failed to comply with orders and reached for an object, which was later identified as a cellphone. Lewis was being surveilled in connection with an attempted homicide warrant when he was shot, and the department stated that the incident was reviewed by a board including the police chief. The findings have drawn criticism from Lewis' family and supporters, who demand accountability and have expressed concerns about the transparency of the investigation. Meanwhile, federal officials have concluded that two U.S. Park Police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Bijan Ghaisar in 2017 also acted within department policies, although one officer violated firearms protocol during the incident.
