Chinese Delivery Driver Dies After Long Shift

A 55-year-old food delivery worker in China, known as Yuan and nicknamed the 'Order King', tragically died while taking a nap on his electric bike after an exhausting 18-hour work shift. This incident occurred in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, and has sparked widespread outrage regarding the working conditions of gig economy workers. Yuan was discovered by a fellow delivery driver after working from 9 PM on September 5 until 1 AM the following day, and was known to earn between 500 and 600 yuan daily, with higher earnings during rainy days. Despite suffering a leg fracture from a recent traffic accident, he resumed work shortly after recovery to support his education-dependent 16-year-old son. The Xianlin Sub-district Office confirmed his death despite emergency treatment and noted that arrangements have been made with the delivery platform and insurance company. This tragedy highlights the severe stress and risks associated with long working hours in the gig economy.
