New Jersey Landfill RNG Facility Begins Commercial Operation Delivering 650,000 MMBtu Annually
A new renewable natural gas (RNG) facility in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, has begun commercial operations, marking a significant milestone in sustainable energy and landfill gas utilization. The facility, a joint venture between OPAL Fuels, South Jersey Industries (SJI), and the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA), captures landfill gas and processes it into RNG with a capacity of 2,500 SCFM, expected to produce over 650,000 MMBtu annually, equivalent to about 4.6 million gasoline-gallon equivalents. This project is the first to inject RNG into the South Jersey Gas pipeline system and supports efforts to reduce emissions, improve air quality, create jobs, and bolster American energy independence. The partnership represents OPAL Fuels' strategy to expand its RNG production portfolio and SJI’s decarbonization roadmap, with a second collaboration underway at a facility in Florence Township, New Jersey. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for October 2025 to celebrate the commissioning. This development highlights the ongoing innovation in renewable energy solutions and the growing role of RNG in transportation fuel decarbonization.
