An explosion at the Rourkela Steel Plant in Odisha on Saturday injured at least five workers, including an officer. The incident occurred around 8:45 am at the Steel Melting Shop-1 (SMS-1) during the slag splashing process after tapping steel from a converter, reportedly due to a jam in the movable hood and water leakage that caused molten iron to splash. The injured individuals, who suffered burn injuries, were promptly taken to Ispat General Hospital, where their conditions are stable, although one officer sustained significant burns. The Rourkela Labour Union has criticized the plant authorities for neglecting safety protocols in favor of maintaining production targets. An investigation has been initiated by RSP, led by a chief general manager, to determine the cause of the explosion. This incident follows a previous accident on July 1, where seven workers were critically injured due to a gas leak at the same plant.
