Nearly One-Third of U.S. Adults Consult Astrology, Tarot Annually

A recent Pew Research Center study reveals that nearly one in three American adults consult astrology, tarot cards, or fortune tellers at least once a year, with most engaging in these practices for entertainment rather than serious religious guidance. The study highlights that younger adults, women, and particularly LGBTQ+ individuals are more likely to participate, with over half of LGBTQ+ Americans consulting astrology annually and a significant portion using these tools for helpful insights or major life decisions. Among religious groups, Hispanic Catholics, Black Protestants, and those identifying as religiously unaffiliated are more inclined toward these practices, whereas atheists and white evangelical Protestants are less likely. Jewish adults also show notable engagement, with over a quarter consulting astrology or horoscopes yearly, though few rely heavily on these practices for major life choices. Despite the growing cultural presence and social media amplification of astrology and related practices, the overall belief in their power remains stable and most Americans approach them with curiosity or playfulness rather than conviction. This trend reflects a broader shift among younger generations who are reconstructing spirituality outside traditional religious frameworks.
