Xcel Energy Center Faces Renovation, Name Change

The City of St. Paul and the Minnesota Wild have reduced their Xcel Energy Center renovation proposal, now seeking $50 million in state funding instead of nearly $400 million. The project's total cost has been trimmed from $769 million to $488 million, focusing only on upgrading the aging arena and delaying improvements to nearby facilities. The city and local partners will contribute $200 million, while the Wild will provide $238 million and cover any cost overruns. Renovations will improve security, accessibility, plumbing, and congestion, with the project aimed at revitalizing downtown St. Paul and supporting economic growth. Legislative approval remains uncertain due to Minnesota's projected budget deficit and rival funding demands. Additionally, the arena is set for a name change as its naming rights agreement with Xcel Energy expires this summer.
