Church fire in Downers Grove

A significant fire broke out at Good Shepherd Church in Downers Grove, Illinois, early Monday morning, causing extensive damage primarily to the roof of the attached classrooms. Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting through the roof and initiated an aggressive interior attack to extinguish the fire. The blaze, which started around 6 a.m., also resulted in traffic being halted on 63rd Street, with some lanes reopening by 9 a.m. Additionally, the incident led to power outages affecting approximately 130,000 ComEd customers due to a car striking a pole with a transformer. Fortunately, the church was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and the cause is currently under investigation.
