Mexican Navy Ship Crash: Repairs and Probe Continue
The Mexican Navy training ship Cuauhtémoc crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge on May 17, killing two sailors and injuring nearly two dozen crew members. The ship, carrying 277 people as part of a global goodwill tour, was towed from Manhattan's Pier 36 to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for repairs after the incident. Officials stated the vessel was supposed to head south but instead drifted backward, striking the bridge and breaking its masts, with a local New York pilot at the helm. The U.S. Coast Guard established a safety zone on the East River, halting maritime traffic and disrupting ferry services between the Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges. The Brooklyn Bridge sustained only minor damage and was never at risk of collapse. Most crew members have since returned to Mexico, and a preliminary National Transportation Safety Board report is expected in the coming weeks.
