UK, Germany Sign Treaty Deepening Defence, Economic Ties

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made his first official visit to the UK, where he met Prime Minister Keir Starmer to sign a new bilateral friendship and cooperation treaty, the first of its kind. The treaty strengthens UK-Germany ties on defence, economic growth, and tackling irregular migration, including Germany's commitment to criminalize facilitating illegal migration to the UK by the end of the year. The leaders also agreed to deepen defence cooperation, including joint production of military equipment like Boxer armoured vehicles and Typhoon jets, and development of a long-range deep precision strike missile. Both emphasized their steadfast support for Ukraine against Russia's invasion and discussed collaboration under US President Donald Trump's plan to provide weapons to Kyiv. They highlighted the urgent need for a ceasefire and hostage release in Gaza to support a two-state solution. Additionally, Germany will soon open its eGates for frequent UK travelers, enhancing bilateral mobility.
