Report Highlights Excessive Drinking Rates in U.S. States

The latest County Health Rankings and Roadmaps report from the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute reveals that one in six American adults are binge drinkers. The report, which evaluates factors impacting health outcomes, highlights excessive alcohol consumption using self-reported data from the CDC's 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance system. Montana reports the highest rate of excessive drinking at 26%, followed by the District of Columbia, Iowa, and North Dakota at 25%. Wisconsin, previously ranking higher for excessive drinking, improved with a decrease to 24%. Additionally, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, and Rhode Island each saw a one-point drop in rates, while Utah, known for historically low rates, showed an increase. These findings demonstrate both progress and challenges in addressing excessive drinking across various states.
