Southeast Fresno Plans 49-Acre Sports Complex Opening 2026
Fresno city leaders have unveiled the name Southeast Fresno Sports Complex for a new 49-acre park in southeast Fresno, a project over two decades in the making that aims to provide much-needed recreational space in one of the city's fastest-growing and underserved areas. The park, donated by the USDA in 2006 and now under construction, will include multiple sports fields, a community gymnasium, walking paths, picnic areas, and facilities for baseball, pickleball, cricket, and soccer, reflecting the diverse local community's needs. Despite broad community input, some local groups, including the Latino Educational Issues Roundtable, have called for the park to be named after José León Barraza to honor Latino community contributions, a proposal to be discussed at an upcoming City Council meeting. Councilmember Brandon Vang emphasized the park's role as an inclusive space for all residents and noted that while the complex itself carries a descriptive name, individual amenities within the park may be named after community members in the future. The park is expected to become one of Fresno's largest, ranking behind only three others in size, with phase one slated for completion by August 2026 and the full project anticipated to be finished within five years. Mayor Jerry Dyer highlighted the park's importance in providing amenities requested by the diverse Punjabi and Latino populations and the broader Southeast Fresno community.
