Malaysia, Thailand Call for Enhanced ASEAN Trade Integration
At a recent conference, Malaysian Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz emphasized the importance of ASEAN centrality in 2025 and highlighted the roles of Hong Kong and Malaysia as gateways to mainland China and beyond. Hong Kong officials also announced plans to enhance their financial markets and trade corridors to solidify the city’s position as a global trade hub, attracting significant investment through schemes that have already drawn HK$6.5 billion. Meanwhile, Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed commitment to deeper regional economic integration under Malaysia's leadership, particularly through the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The Thai Commerce Minister also reinforced Thailand’s role alongside Hong Kong in advancing free trade agreements and economic collaboration, citing existing agreements that bolster trade relations. Both Thailand and Hong Kong are positioning themselves as crucial players in the ASEAN region's economic landscape, aiming to enhance trade security and resilience. These developments reflect a growing trend of cooperation among Southeast Asian nations and Hong Kong to leverage their strategic locations for broader economic benefits.
