Coroner rules BBC worker Kate Mitchell unlawfully killed in Kenya

Kate Mitchell, a 42-year-old project manager for BBC Media Action, was found murdered in a Nairobi hotel room in November 2021, with an intruder reportedly jumping or falling to his death from the eighth floor shortly after. An inquest concluded that Mitchell was unlawfully killed, suffering fatal injuries from a head trauma and strangulation. Previously based in Addis Ababa, she had moved to Nairobi due to safety concerns stemming from the civil war in Ethiopia. Her brother, Pete Mitchell, has expressed frustration over the Kenyan police's lack of cooperation in the investigation, stating they have stonewalled inquiries and have not returned her personal belongings. He emphasized that his sister's murder highlighted issues of femicide that affect women globally, not just in Africa. The family is seeking a further inquest in Kenya to uncover more details about the circumstances of her death.
