WMO Warns 80% Chance Global Temperatures Break Records 2025-2029
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and other leading weather agencies forecast that global temperatures are expected to remain at or near record highs over the next five years, with an 80% chance that at least one year between 2025 and 2029 will surpass the current warmest year on record, 2024. There is an 86% likelihood that at least one year in this period will exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, and a 70% chance that the five-year average temperature will also surpass this critical threshold. While the Paris Agreement target of limiting long-term warming to 1.5°C has not yet been permanently breached, these near-term spikes signal an accelerating climate crisis with serious consequences, including more intense heatwaves, droughts, floods, melting ice, and rising sea levels. The Arctic is expected to warm significantly faster than the global average, contributing to further sea ice loss and disrupted weather patterns worldwide. The projections also highlight regional variations, such as increased precipitation in parts of South Asia, northern Europe, and the African Sahel, while areas like the Amazon may experience drought. These findings underscore the urgent need for climate action to mitigate further warming and its escalating risks to societies and ecosystems.
