Construction Begins on $1B Durham-Scarborough Rapid Transit in Ajax

Significant infrastructure projects are underway in several regions to address growth and improve transit and road capacity. In West Kelowna, a $23 million expansion at Hudson Road Elementary will add 265 seats through a two-storey addition, addressing current overcapacity and including safety upgrades, with completion expected by fall 2028. In the Durham Region and Scarborough, construction has begun on the $1 billion Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit (DSBRT) project, featuring dedicated median bus lanes, transit platforms, and cycling infrastructure along a 36-kilometre corridor to improve transit efficiency and accommodate an expected increase in residents and jobs; the first phase in Ajax will be completed by mid-2027. This BRT service is anticipated to provide two-way service every five minutes and reduce transit trip times by 20 minutes along Highway 2. Meanwhile, in York Region, construction will resume on Yonge Street in Newmarket to widen the road from four to six lanes, adding sidewalks, cycle tracks, and landscaped medians to manage daily traffic of around 50,000 vehicles, with work set to finish by late 2027 and efforts to minimize disruption to local businesses. These projects reflect a broader provincial and regional commitment to expanding capacity and modernizing infrastructure in response to population growth and transit demand.
