Thai-Cambodian Border Fire Incidents Highlight Ceasefire Tensions

Recent clashes have erupted along the Thai-Cambodian border despite a US-backed ceasefire agreement brokered in July 2025. Cambodia's Ministry of National Defence accused Thai forces of initiating mortar and rifle fire in the An Seh area of Preah Vihear province, with Cambodian troops maintaining restraint and not retaliating. Conversely, the Thai army reported Cambodian soldiers firing into the Chong An Ma area in Ubon Ratchathani province and accused Cambodia of provocations to elicit Thai return fire, especially before visits by Cambodian observers. Both sides continue to blame each other for violating the ceasefire, with Cambodia emphasizing its commitment to peace and urging Thailand to respect the agreement, while Thailand accuses Cambodia of deliberately altering terrain and building settlements in disputed areas to provoke tensions. The Thai military also stressed that the border dispute is not between the peoples of the two nations but stems from Cambodia's alleged disregard for bilateral agreements. Both countries remain engaged in diplomatic and military channels to seek a peaceful resolution, despite the recent breaches and ongoing tensions along the border.
