Pistoia Bus Driver Killed in Rieti Motorway Attack

A driver was killed after stones and bricks were thrown at a coach carrying about 40 Pistoia Basket 2000 supporters following their Serie A2 win over SRS Sebastiani Rieti, when a projectile smashed the windscreen and fatally struck the driver on the Rieti-Terni/A2 motorway near the Contigliano junction. Investigators say several attackers hiding behind motorway guardrails allegedly followed the coach for kilometres beyond where police escorts had ended. Police have questioned around 10 Rieti supporters but made no arrests. The attack has drawn national shock and condemnation from local officials and clubs, including Pistoia Basket 2000, Sebastiani, Rieti’s mayor Daniele Sinibaldi, Sports Minister Andrea Abodi, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Federbasket president Gianni Petrucci. Authorities describe the incident as a very serious criminal matter and have pledged a thorough investigation.
