Google Appeals Epic Games Verdict and Order
Google has filed an appeal with the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn a jury verdict and a district court order mandating changes to its Play Store and Android operating system, following a lawsuit by Epic Games. The tech giant claims the trial judge made critical legal errors that unfairly favored Epic, potentially disrupting app developers and consumers by requiring a significant redesign of its platforms. Epic Games, which accused Google of monopolizing app distribution and in-app transactions, argues that Google's appeal is an attempt to avoid compliance with a unanimous jury decision. The ruling, currently on hold pending appeal, demands Google allow rival app stores and app catalog access on its platform, changes Google contends could negatively impact the ecosystem and introduce security risks. Google asserts the case should not have gone to trial as it sought an injunction rather than monetary damages and argues that the ruling diminishes developer rights and does not consider competition with Apple. A $700 million settlement was agreed upon, with $630 million benefiting consumers and $70 million supporting the states involved in the lawsuit.
