Spotify Launches In-App Direct Messaging for Music Sharing

Spotify has introduced a new direct messaging feature called Messages, allowing users to chat and share music, podcasts, and audiobooks directly within the app without needing third-party platforms. The feature is rolling out this week in select markets for users aged 16 and older on mobile devices, supporting one-on-one conversations with text and emoji reactions. Users can only message people they've connected with through shared playlists, plans, or previous interactions, and must approve chat requests before engaging. Messages are protected by industry-standard encryption, though not end-to-end, and Spotify monitors and reviews content to maintain safety, with options for users to block, report, or opt out of messaging. This integration aims to centralize content sharing within Spotify, complementing existing external sharing options on social media and messaging platforms. Spotify hopes this feature will enhance user engagement by providing a seamless, dedicated space for music-related social interaction.
