The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded $389 million to the New England states for the 'Power Up New England' initiative, aimed at enhancing the region's electrical infrastructure to better accommodate offshore wind power. This funding will facilitate upgrades to interconnection points in southeastern Massachusetts and Connecticut, enabling an additional 4,800 megawatts of renewable energy to be integrated into the grid, enough to power about 2 million households. A significant portion of the funds will also support a new battery storage project in northern Maine, which can dispatch power for up to 100 hours, addressing current limitations in delivering onshore wind-generated power to southern New England. The project is expected to reduce energy costs by approximately $1.55 billion for customers and significantly lower fault risks for zero-carbon generators. This investment is part of a broader $2.2 billion initiative by the Biden-Harris Administration to strengthen U.S. energy infrastructure against extreme weather and to promote clean energy solutions. State officials, including Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, have emphasized the importance of these upgrades in transitioning to a cleaner energy grid and reducing reliance on natural gas.
