Axon Enterprise Inc. has canceled its groundbreaking for a new headquarters in Scottsdale, originally scheduled for January 10, due to a ballot referendum that could potentially halt the project. The company, which has been based in Scottsdale since 1993, is now considering relocating its operations out of Arizona as it faces political challenges that threaten its mission. The proposed development included a 250,000-square-foot headquarters, nearly 2,000 residential units, and retail spaces, projected to create 5,500 jobs and generate significant tax revenue. CEO Rick Smith expressed frustration over the uncertainty caused by the referendum, citing the need for a supportive community for their goals. The Scottsdale City Council had previously approved the project, but opposition from groups like Taxpayers Against Awful Apartment Zoning Exemptions led to the petition drive to put the issue to a vote.
