In Odisha, two separate incidents of elephant electrocution have raised concerns about wildlife safety. A female elephant died after coming into contact with live wires intended to protect paddy crops in Mayurbhanj district, while another sub-adult female elephant was electrocuted by illegally hooked electric wires near Rourkela. The first incident involved a herd of 11 elephants, with the deceased female getting separated and entering human settlement areas. In the Rourkela case, the responsible individual for the illegal hookup remains at large. Both incidents highlight ongoing challenges with human-wildlife conflict and illegal electrical installations in forested regions. The forest department is conducting investigations into these alarming occurrences to prevent future fatalities.
