Colorado Chain Law Takes Effect September 1 Across Stateroads
Colorado's Chain Law and Passenger Vehicle Traction Law took effect on September 1 and will remain in force through May 31, requiring all drivers to be prepared for snow and ice conditions, especially in high-elevation areas where summer snow is not uncommon. Vehicles weighing over 16,000 pounds, including commercial and recreational vehicles, must carry chains or approved alternative traction devices (ATDs) on designated routes such as I-70, U.S. Route 50, U.S. Route 160, U.S. Route 285, and U.S. Route 550, regardless of weather conditions, with fines for noncompliance up to $500 or $1,000 if blocking traffic. Passenger vehicles under 16,001 pounds traveling on I-70 between Morrison and Dotsero must have tire chains, approved ATDs, or tires with at least 3/16-inch tread rated for all-weather or mud and snow conditions, facing fines of $50 for violations. The Colorado State Patrol will conduct a Commercial Motor Vehicle Chain Check operation on September 4 near Dotsero to enforce compliance. Col. Matthew C. Packard emphasized the importance of preparedness to avoid delays from crashes or road closures, reminding drivers that the law applies to all vehicles, not just large trucks. Information and updates on the chain law are actively communicated by the Colorado State Patrol and Department of Transportation to ensure safe travel across the state’s mountain roads.
