UK Electric Vehicles Surpass One Million Mark, Reflecting 38.9% Growth

In 2024, the UK has seen a significant increase in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, with over 1.3 million EVs on the roads, marking a 38.9% year-on-year rise. This surge has led to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) comprising 3.7% of all cars in use, while plug-in vehicles account for one in every 20 vehicles on British roads. The overall vehicle ownership also reached a record high of 42 million, with petrol cars remaining dominant, though diesel vehicles continue to decline. The increase in EVs has contributed to a 1.6% decrease in average CO2 emissions from the car fleet, largely driven by newer, lower-emission technologies replacing older units. However, the average age of vehicles has risen to 9.5 years, highlighting a trend of motorists retaining their vehicles longer. Industry experts emphasize the need for enhanced incentives and infrastructure to further accelerate the transition to greener transport.
