Google Invests $13M in FireSat Wildfire Detection
Google has announced a $13 million investment in a new satellite constellation called FireSat, aimed at detecting and tracking wildfires globally. The FireSat project, led by the Earth Fire Alliance in collaboration with Muon Space and other partners, will deploy over 50 satellites equipped with custom infrared sensors and AI technology. These satellites will be capable of identifying wildfires as small as 16 by 16 feet and updating imagery every 20 minutes. This initiative aims to improve early wildfire detection, leveraging high-resolution, frequently updated satellite data to provide real-time operational intelligence to firefighting authorities. The project will also support the creation of a global historical record of fire spread, aiding better ecosystem management and climate action.
