BYD Triples Electric Bus Output With $94M Hungary Expansion
Chinese new energy vehicle manufacturer BYD is investing $94 million to expand its electric bus and truck production facility in Komarom, northern Hungary, tripling its annual output to 1,250 vehicles and creating over 600 new jobs. This expansion includes a new 29,000-square-meter plant and a dedicated research and development test laboratory, reinforcing Hungary's role as a key hub for Chinese electric vehicle manufacturing in Europe. The Komarom facility is part of BYD's broader European strategy, which also includes an electric car factory in Szeged and plans for a European headquarters and R&D center in Budapest. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto highlighted the investment's strategic importance, noting Hungary's open approach to East-West cooperation and its success in attracting nearly a third of Chinese inward investment in Europe. The project is supported by a government grant of 3.1 billion forints ($9.1 million), reflecting Hungary’s strong commitment to fostering Chinese investment despite broader EU tensions over Chinese EV tariffs. BYD’s expansion aims to meet Europe’s growing demand for zero-emission urban transport solutions, with the new buses offering significant cost and emissions advantages over diesel alternatives.
