UEFA Approves Miami and Perth League Matches
UEFA has reluctantly approved two domestic league fixtures to be played abroad — Villarreal vs Barcelona in Miami on Dec. 20 and AC Milan vs Como in Perth in February — saying current FIFA rules give it no clear basis to block the requests. The governing body stressed the approvals are exceptional, will not set a precedent, and reiterated its opposition, warning such moves risk disenfranchising local fans and distorting competitions. The decision has provoked widespread opposition from supporters, clubs, players and groups such as Football Supporters Europe, who say they will continue to resist and warn of long-term harm to domestic football. UEFA said it will actively contribute to FIFA’s ongoing rulemaking to ensure future regulations preserve the integrity of national competitions and the bond between clubs and their communities.
