Over 50,000 Evacuated Across Western Turkey Amid Izmir Wildfires
Turkey is battling intense wildfires primarily in the western Izmir province, leading to the evacuation of over 50,000 people from 41 settlements, according to the AFAD disaster agency and Turkish Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli. The fires, fueled by strong winds reaching up to 120 km/h, have caused widespread damage, including the destruction of around 20 homes and disruption of operations at Izmir's Adnan Menderes Airport. Firefighters are deploying over 1,000 personnel, helicopters, planes, and numerous fire engines to contain the blazes, which have also threatened industrial zones and forced evacuations in Manisa, Hatay, and other parts of northwestern Turkey. These wildfires are part of a broader trend linked to hotter, drier summers attributed to climate change, with Turkey's coastal areas suffering repeated wildfire threats in recent years. The situation coincides with an early summer heatwave affecting much of Europe, where countries like France, Spain, and Italy are also experiencing high temperatures and wildfires, amplifying concerns about climate-related disasters. Authorities continue to emphasize the strenuous efforts of emergency responders working around the clock to manage the fires and protect affected communities.
