Severe Flooding in Myanmar Claims Lives, Displaces Thousands

Severe flooding across Myanmar, triggered by remnants of Typhoon Yagi, has resulted in at least 160 confirmed deaths and widespread displacement, particularly in Shan state and central regions like Mandalay and Naypyidaw. The military junta, which has been struggling with an armed rebellion since a coup in 2021, has not released an official death toll, leading to speculation that actual numbers may be higher than reported. Rescue efforts are hampered by a lack of manpower and ongoing conflict, with reports indicating that over 3,600 people have been evacuated to safer areas. Many regions remain submerged, with satellite imagery showing significant flooding across 162 sq km around Naypyidaw and 366 sq km around Mandalay. Humanitarian aid agencies are facing severe access restrictions, as approximately one-third of Myanmar's population requires assistance. The floods have compounded the country’s existing economic crisis and social unrest, with neighboring countries like Vietnam and Thailand also suffering from the storm's impact.
