Elk Grove Council Approves New Zoo Name

The Elk Grove City Council unanimously approved naming the new zoo the 'Elk Grove – Sacramento Zoo,' recognizing both Elk Grove's financial contributions and the historical brand of the Sacramento Zoo. The decision followed a proposal to relocate the zoo from Land Park to a 65-acre site in Elk Grove, which will house over 400 animals and feature a 23-acre African savanna exhibit. The relocation project is estimated to cost $302 million, with Elk Grove as the largest financial contributor. The council considered alternative names to emphasize Elk Grove's role while maintaining the Sacramento Zoo's legacy. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, following the completion of the design phase by 2026. The project reflects a collaborative effort between Elk Grove officials and the Sacramento Zoological Society to preserve the zoo's historic identity while accommodating regional growth.
