Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash Near Clear Lake

A two-vehicle crash on US 212 near Clear Lake, South Dakota, resulted in one fatality and one serious injury on November 12, 2024. Richard Allen Vant Hul, 53, from Sioux Falls, was driving eastbound in a 2022 Chrysler Voyager when he was struck head-on by a westbound 2013 Ford Econoline driven by 27-year-old Kevin Kipyego Mengich from White Bear Lake, Minnesota, who crossed into the eastbound lane to overtake another vehicle. Vant Hul died at the scene, while Mengich sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Sioux Falls hospital.
