Pirates Promote Johan Oviedo for Start Against Blue Jays

The Pittsburgh Pirates will recall right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo from Triple-A Indianapolis to start against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday. Oviedo, who has struggled in his limited major league action this season, pitched only one inning earlier in August, allowing two runs and three hits before being sent back to Triple-A. However, he has shown improved performance in the minors, striking out 15 batters over 8.2 innings with a 15:3 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Interim manager Don Kelly expressed confidence in Oviedo's competitiveness and his ability to earn a rotation spot for the remainder of the season. Oviedo's return follows a delayed start to the 2025 campaign due to a lat injury sustained in spring training. Despite a tough matchup against a strong Blue Jays lineup, the Pirates are giving Oviedo a fair chance to secure his place in the rotation.
