Parents Demand Change to School Dress Code

Parents in Clovis, California, are outraged after their daughters were reprimanded on the first day of school for allegedly violating the strict dress code at Alta Sierra Intermediate School by wearing popular Lululemon shorts, which have an inseam of 3-4 inches. They claim that school officials patrolled the hallways excessively, calling out girls in front of their peers and subjecting them to body-shaming. Parent Brenna Hughes, representing a group of concerned parents, has launched a Change.org petition demanding amendments to the dress code, arguing that the current 5-inch inseam requirement unfairly impacts girls while being more lenient for boys. She highlighted the difficulty in finding compliant clothing for girls and suggested that the policy could violate Title IX. Meanwhile, in a separate instance, parents in the Wellsboro Area School District have also voiced concerns over their dress code, pointing out similar issues regarding gender disparities and unnecessary stress on students. The board has indicated that modifications to the policy are in the works as they review community feedback.
