PGA Tour Drops Starting Strokes for 2025 Finale
The PGA Tour has eliminated the starting-strokes format for the 2025 Tour Championship, returning to a traditional 72-hole stroke-play event at East Lake Golf Club, with all 30 qualifiers starting at even par. This change responds to widespread criticism from players and fans who found the previous system unfair and confusing. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, last year's winner under the old format, has voiced strong support for the new approach, which aims to create a more level playing field and enhance competition. The course setup will be adjusted to promote greater risk and reward, making qualification for the event more prestigious and spectator-friendly. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan credited the Player Advisory Council with leading the reform to simplify and invigorate the finale. Rory McIlroy is skipping the Memorial tournament this week but is expected to compete at the upcoming U.S. Open.
