Norfolk ICE-Stop Death, Plus Interstate Pedestrian Fatalities
A 25-year-old man, Jose Castro-Rivera, died after running onto I-264 in Norfolk while fleeing what DHS described as a “targeted, intelligence-based” ICE stop; he was struck by a pickup, an ICE officer attempted CPR, and Virginia State Police are investigating. DHS said Castro-Rivera was in the country illegally and blamed activists and reporters for emboldening resistance, but declined further comment about the enforcement operation or policies for conducting operations on busy highways. In Yolo County near Woodland, California, a 37-year-old man from Seattle was fatally struck around 8:08 p.m. by an all-white tractor-trailer after reportedly running into traffic on Interstate 5; CHP says the truck fled southbound and is seeking the rig, possibly damaged on the left front headlight and with a cattle guard. Other interstate incidents this week included a pedestrian struck and killed on I-12 near Denham Springs, La., and a 56-year-old man fatally struck in a hit-and-run in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. A pedestrian was also killed by a tractor-trailer on an I-10 on-ramp near Vail, Ariz., and a pedestrian in Sturgis, Mich., was hospitalized and flown to a regional trauma center after being struck. Authorities across the incidents said investigations are ongoing and urged anyone with information to contact local law enforcement.
