Sweden Plans $7.5B Military Aid Boost to Ukraine

Sweden has committed to providing Ukraine with significant military aid totaling approximately $7.5 to $8.4 billion over the next two years, including a recent $836 million package featuring 18 Archer self-propelled artillery systems, additional ammunition, maritime equipment, air defense enhancements, and support vehicles. The Archer artillery systems will increase Ukraine's total to 44 units, which Ukrainian forces have confirmed as effective against Russian targets. This aid also includes coastal radar systems, upgraded Combat Boat 90 vessels, drones, and equipment to support air bases, illustrating Sweden's sustained and multifaceted military support. Meanwhile, Ukraine faces a $7.2 billion shortfall in its 2025 defense budget amid ongoing conflict, prompting plans for increased domestic borrowing and efforts to negotiate more flexible use of international aid, including EU funds. The Swedish Defense Minister emphasized that the support aims to strengthen Ukraine's battlefield capabilities and maintain pressure on Russia until the war ends. Sweden's efforts are coordinated within NATO and reflect a long-term commitment to Ukraine's defense and civil support needs through 2027 and beyond.
