Drivers Caught Exceeding 90mph on 30mph Roads Across UK

An investigation by the RAC has unveiled alarming instances of extreme speeding across the UK, with nearly half of police forces reporting motorists exceeding 90mph on 30mph roads between January 2023 and August 2024. The highest recorded speeds included 167mph on a 70mph stretch of the M1 and 122mph in South Yorkshire on a 30mph road. The data, obtained through Freedom of Information requests, highlights that 90% of forces noted drivers traveling at 60mph or more in 30mph zones, underscoring the significant risk posed to public safety. RAC spokesperson Rod Dennis emphasized the dangerous nature of such reckless driving and called for government action to address road safety. Additionally, the National Police Chiefs’ Council acknowledged that while some speeding may be accidental, the extreme speeds reported indicate a deliberate disregard for traffic laws. Local officials, including Richard Parker, the mayor of the West Midlands, have urged immediate action to prevent further fatalities on the roads.
