Ann Arbor Hotel Sued Over Pool Infection Causing Severe Antibiotic-Resistant Illness
Alexis Williams, a 23-year-old woman from Flint, has filed a lawsuit against the Residence Inn Downtown Ann Arbor, owned by First Martin Corporation, after suffering a severe antibiotic-resistant MRSA infection linked to the hotel's poorly maintained indoor pool. Williams and her younger cousins swam in the pool, which was later found by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to have zero chlorine, unsafe pH levels, and high bacterial counts on multiple days surrounding the incident. Following a minor abrasion in the pool, Williams developed a painful infection requiring three surgeries and ongoing intravenous antibiotics, with doctors warning of potential leg amputation. The lawsuit alleges the hotel was aware of the unsanitary conditions but failed to close the pool or warn guests, violating public health regulations. Williams now faces significant physical challenges, including immobility and reliance on assistance, and is seeking damages exceeding $25,000 for medical and emotional distress. Despite media requests, the hotel and its parent company have yet to publicly respond to the allegations.
