Kentucky State Capitol Closes for $291M Renovation Project

News summary

Kentucky's State Capitol in Frankfort has closed to the public to begin a $291.5 million multi-year renovation project, the first major overhaul in over 70 years. Funded by the Kentucky General Assembly, the renovation aims to modernize infrastructure, address decades of deferred maintenance, enhance accessibility, improve safety, and revitalize public and staff spaces to extend the building's lifespan by 50 years. Agencies including the Governor’s Office, Kentucky Supreme Court, and Legislative Research Commission have relocated to other buildings during construction. While parts of the Capitol Grounds will be closed for safety, the Floral Clock, flower beds, Kentucky COVID-19 Memorial, Gold Star Families Monument, and Capitol steps will remain open to the public. The renovation also includes work on the Capitol Education Center, expected to reopen by mid-September 2025. Messer Construction leads the project with EOP Architects designing, and structural and preservation work is ongoing to maintain the historic 115-year-old building’s facade.
