Scottish Children’s TV Legend Glen Michael Dies Age 99
Glen Michael, the beloved Scottish entertainer and longtime presenter of the children’s television program Cartoon Cavalcade, has passed away peacefully at his home in South Ayrshire at age 99. Born Cecil Buckland in Devon in 1926, Michael adopted his stage name inspired by bandleader Glenn Miller and began his career entertaining British troops during World War II before establishing himself in Scottish variety theatre alongside stars such as Rikki Fulton and Jack Milroy. Cartoon Cavalcade, which first aired in 1966 and ran for 26 years on STV, became a cherished staple of Scottish children’s television, featuring memorable characters like Paladin the talking lamp and Totty the Robot. Beyond television, Michael appeared in many STV programs and dramas and briefly filmed a cameo for the 2010 movie Kick-Ass, invited by comic book writer Mark Millar, although the scene was ultimately cut. STV Managing Director Bobby Hain and many fans expressed deep sorrow and fond memories of Michael’s warm personality and significant contribution to Scottish entertainment. Michael is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughters, and his family has thanked medical professionals for their care during his final illness.
