Labour reform deems extra 400,000 unfit for work
Recent changes to the UK's welfare system by the Labour government are projected to result in an additional 400,000 people being deemed unfit to work by 2030, according to government figures. Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall's reforms have scrapped previous Conservative plans aimed at requiring more individuals with mobility and mental health issues to seek employment. The Office for Budget Responsibility estimates that the number of people receiving incapacity benefits will rise to three million, up from earlier projections of 2.6 million. Although Labour claims their reforms will ultimately aid in returning more people to work, critics, including members of their own party, express concerns about the impact on employment rates, predicting a reduction of 16,000 workers.
