Grizzly bear 399, a 28-year-old iconic figure in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, was fatally struck by a vehicle in Snake River Canyon, Wyoming, on October 22, 2024. Known as an ambassador for her species, she had a yearling cub with her at the time of the accident, but its whereabouts remain unknown. Wildlife officials confirmed her identity through ear tags and a microchip, highlighting her significance as the oldest known reproducing female grizzly bear in the area. Grizzly bear 399 had inspired many through her life and offspring, raising awareness about conservation. The incident marks the second grizzly bear death from vehicle collisions this year, part of a troubling trend with 49 such fatalities recorded between 2009 and 2023. The community mourns her loss as she played a crucial role in promoting stewardship for wildlife.
