UK Restores Funding for Exascale Supercomputer
The UK government has restored £750 million in funding to construct an exascale supercomputer at the University of Edinburgh, after Labour initially cancelled the project previously pledged by the Conservatives. Once operational, the system will be up to 50 times more powerful than the current ARCHER2 and among only a handful of exascale computers worldwide. The facility will drive research in AI, drug discovery, climate modeling, and national security, and is a centerpiece of broader government efforts to spur economic growth and technological innovation. The investment is complemented by £1 billion to expand public AI compute resources, further strengthening the UK’s research infrastructure. Full technical details of the supercomputer will be announced later in 2025, and the University of Edinburgh aims to complete the project by 2027. The initiative is expected to support startups and scientific breakthroughs across the UK.
