Carson Spiers Recalled, Set to Start for Reds Sunday

The Cincinnati Reds placed starting pitcher Nick Lodolo on the paternity list and recalled right-hander Carson Spiers from Triple-A Louisville to fill his roster spot. Spiers was initially slated to start Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles in Lodolo’s absence, after having made two prior starts for the Reds earlier in the season. However, after an early exit by Hunter Greene in Saturday’s game, manager Terry Francona used Spiers out of the bullpen, where he struggled, allowing four runs over four innings. Following this extended relief appearance, Francona declined to name a starter for Sunday's series finale, and Spiers is likely to return to Triple-A as the Reds consider further roster moves to bolster their pitching staff.
