EU Begins Gradual Sanctions Lift on Kosovo Amid Northern Tensions

The European Union has initiated the gradual lifting of sanctions imposed on Kosovo in 2023 due to tensions in the Serb-majority northern region, where Kosovo's nationalist Prime Minister Albin Kurti has sought to extend government control. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas emphasized that this easing is conditional on a sustained de-escalation of violence and hostilities in northern Kosovo, as well as Kosovo's respect for the Ohrid Agreement. Kallas has personally engaged with EU member states to support lifting these measures, while urging Kosovo's political parties to resolve disputes and form a functioning government to advance EU membership aspirations. She also highlighted the importance of Kosovo taking advantage of the EU's Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, which depends on stable institutions capable of reforms. Additionally, Kallas reaffirmed the EU's commitment to facilitating dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, underscoring Kosovo's equal status in negotiations and the need for reduced tensions to foster closer ties with Europe. The sanctions had included economic curbs such as cutting at least €150 million in funding and restrictions linked to governmental actions in the north, including shutting down postal centers and banning the Serbian currency.
