The ethnic conflict in Manipur has escalated into a 'battle of narratives,' driven by false claims such as drone bombings and the infiltration of 900 militants from Myanmar, according to Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi. Speaking at the Chanakya Defence Dialogue 2024, he emphasized the need to control these rumors to stabilize the region. Dwivedi confirmed that the violence began in May 2023 due to false reports of an Anglo-Kuki war centenary gate being burnt. He also highlighted societal weaponization and the necessity of a comprehensive national approach to rebuild trust. Efforts are ongoing to restore normalcy, with the deployment of 126 Army and Assam Rifles columns aimed at restoring trust among the communities. The situation remains stable yet tense, with a significant polarization between communities.
