Arriva Signs €300 Million Škoda Deal for 22 Electric Trains in Czechia
Arriva Group has signed a €300 million contract with Škoda Group to supply 22 new electric multiple units (EMUs) for long-distance rail services in the Czech Republic, set to enter operation in December 2028. The trains, capable of speeds up to 200 km/h, will serve key routes connecting Prague, Pilsen, and Western Bohemia, enhancing travel speed and sustainability while offering features like onboard Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and accessibility accommodations. The fleet includes 16 three-car and 6 four-car variants, with seating capacities of 224 and 315 respectively, and amenities such as vending machines, first-class sections, and bistros. These dual-system trains will operate on 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC power, with the potential for future conversion to 15 kV AC, and will be equipped with advanced safety and automation technologies including ETCS and ATO. Arriva’s investment follows a 15-year, €750 million contract awarded by the Czech Ministry of Transport, reflecting the company’s commitment to expanding modern, sustainable rail services and sourcing approximately 80% of the supply chain locally to support regional economic growth. Sian Leydon, Arriva’s Managing Director for Mainland Europe, emphasized the partnership with Škoda as a milestone in growing liberalized European rail markets and advancing greener travel alternatives.
