Drones Threaten Security in Multiple UK Prisons

The chief inspector of prisons, Charlie Taylor, has declared that the use of drones to deliver contraband such as drugs and weapons into high-security UK prisons constitutes a national security threat. Inspections at HMP Manchester and HMP Long Lartin revealed serious security lapses, with organized crime gangs effectively controlling the airspace above these facilities. These prisons house some of the most dangerous inmates, including terrorists and organized crime leaders, increasing risks of armed violence, escapes, and hostage situations. Taylor criticized the disrepair of security measures like protective netting and CCTV, noting inmates have even burned holes in windows to receive drone deliveries. The watchdog urges immediate action from the police and prison services to curb the influence of organized gangs and enhance overall security.
