Shumate is best remembered for his time at Notre Dame, where he led the team to a historic victory against UCLA in 1974, ending their record 88-game winning streak. Drafted by the Phoenix Suns as the fourth overall pick in 1974, Shumate had a notable NBA career, playing for several teams and earning All-NBA Rookie First Team honors in 1976. After retiring from playing, he embarked on a coaching career, including roles at Grand Canyon University, SMU, and the Phoenix Mercury.
