ADAC Study: EVs Exhibit Greater Reliability Than ICE Vehicles
A recent study by Germany's ADAC reveals that electric vehicles (EVs) are proving to be more reliable than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Analyzing over 3.6 million breakdowns, the study found that for cars registered between 2020 and 2022, EVs experienced only 4.2 breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles, compared to 10.4 for ICE vehicles. Despite a 46% increase in breakdowns involving electric cars, they still accounted for just 1.2% of all breakdown calls, indicating their growing reliability as more EVs hit the roads. The study highlighted that the primary issue for both vehicle types was the 12-volt battery, responsible for around half of the breakdowns. Interestingly, tire-related failures were slightly more common in EVs, likely due to their increased weight. Overall, this marks the first year ADAC has felt confident enough in its data to claim that EVs outperform ICE vehicles in reliability.
